Court Says There Was Hospital Negligence In Death Of Baby Boy. |
December 17th, 2009.
A court has ruled that there was negligence in the death of baby Aaron Ramkisson at the Sangre Grande Hospital five years ago.
Justice Vashiest Kokaram yesterday ordered the Eastern Regional Health Authority pay the parents of the child 22 thousand dollars in compensation.
But Deonath Ramkissoon and Deneicia Sookram say that’s not enough.
They were hoping to be given up to 200 thousand dollars in compensation.
The child’s father is quoted as saying it’s not simply about the money but after all the trauma of losing a child the sum awarded was not enough.
Mr. Ramkissoon reportedly says 22 thousand dollars cannot even cover the expenses of travelling to and from home and legal fees.
Baby Aaron Ramkissoon died at the hospital hours after his birth in January 2005.
Aaron was born on January 11th 2005.
His mother said she fed him, and had not finished burping him when a nurse took him away.
She said she objected but was ignored.
Ms. Sookram told the court she fell asleep and got up at around five o’clock but did not see her son in the Cot beside her.
She said she was told by a nurse that her baby was having breathing problems.
An X-ray was ordered and later that morning Ms. Sookram was told that Aaron died.
