March 17th, 2010.
Days after she took the Oath of Office and became an Opposition Senator, Social Worker Verna St. Rose Greaves make an impassioned plea for reform of the Prison System.
Mrs. St. Rose Greaves got to the point of tears, as she explained the many ills faced by prisoners and their families.
She slammed the Government, saying it has failed to address so many of the issues in the country.
Senator St. Rose Greaves made her first contribution to the Senate, during debate on the Prisons Amendment Act yesterday.
Once the Bill becomes Law, if you are caught trafficking prohibited items into the prisons of this country, you would be fined 25 thousand dollars and three years in jail.
Last evening in the Upper House the Bill got the nod from all sides, including newly appointed Senators.
Earlier in the debate the National Security Minister, Martin Joseph, explained that the new penalties are to deter people from taking banned items into the prisons.
The Bill also paves the way for mandatory drug testing of all prisoners.
Minister Joseph said the action is invasive, but necessary.
