President of the Agricultural Society, Dhanoo Sookoo is backing a decision by the Ministry of Agriculture to cull cattle in Cedros.
The action by the ministry which was assisted by soldiers yesterday drew outrage. Several of the stray animals in the area were killed. The cattle owners accused the ministry of taking away their livelihood in an area where the fishing and coconut industries are failing. However, according to Ms. Sookoo, the animals are destroying crops, damaging property and are a health risk. Ms. Sookoo also said the owners of the cows are delinquent and their animals leave other farmers in expense. In a notice last Sunday, the ministry advised cattle owners to secure their animals or they would be captured, slaughtered and disposed of.
