Kirk Waithe of Fixing T&T says the Police Service Commission cannot fire Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs, however he is of the view that Commissioner Gibbs and Deputy Jack Ewatski should go.
This as the National Security Council discusses the nine hundred thousand dollar contract signed by Commissioner Gibbs to lease a light surveillance aircraft to aid in the fight against crime. Mr. Waithe says the PSC can only recommend his dismissal as his contract is really with government. The council headed by Prime Minster, Kamla Persad Bissessar was taken by surprise in the parliament last Friday when opposition MP Donna Cox revealed details of the lease. Yesterday, Minister of National Security, John Sandy expressed disappointment that he was not informed of the contract before it was signed. Mr. Waithe says there is nothing initially wrong with Commissioner Gibbs’ efforts to fight crime, but the procurement procedures are questionable. Mr. Waithe believes both Commissioner Gibbs and Deputy Commissioner Ewatski should vacate office and an acting Police Commissioner be appointed.
