Former journalist, Owen Baptiste says he is disappointed with the focus print media gives to the government.
Speaking at the launch of his book ‘The Seagulls Won’t Come Down’ yesterday, Mr. Baptiste said the attention given to the government is not a healthy one.
Mr. Baptiste called on local journalists to be independent of their sources.
The book chronicles Mr. Baptiste’s twelve year stay in China, but also tells the story of his love for and break with the local newspaper industry in 1998.
The book also covers his years at the Caribbean News Agency, the Trinidad Express, the Trinidad Guardian, the Barbados Advocate, and the Jamaica Observer.
It also offers a frank assessment of the current state of local journalism.
The book is written in the form of a series of letters and was originally titled letters to my sons.
