Reports of police brutality at the panorama semi-finals at the Queens Park Savannah are engaging the attention of the Police Complaints Authority (PCA).
Yesterday, police used wooden batons to disperse a crowd attempting to get past barriers between the north stand and the party on greens. In a statement today, the PCA said while it recognises the role of the police service in crowd control and the real threat by members of the public who feel their expectations are not met by promoters, police officers must carry out their duties within the parameters of the law. The PCA says as an independent body with the power to investigate criminal offences involving police officers, police corruption and serious police misconduct, it will address all matters within its remit with the requisite objectivity and impartiality. The PCA says members of the public can call its office and lodge complaints. While Pantrinbago president, Keith Diaz refuses to comment on the fracas at the semi-finals of the Panorama competiton, National Carnival Commission chairman, Patrick Arnold describes it as unfortunate. Mr. Arnold, the immediate past president of Pantribago, says he has always viewed the Panorama party on the greens idea as a recipe for disaster. Mr. Arnold says that should not have happened. The NCC chairman did not say he will not allow the same next year but did say there will be no other show as long as Panorama is on. Meanwhile pantrinbago president, Keith Diaz stayed clear of the incident, saying he was not around when it happened and he is satisfied with the quality of the music from the various bands in the competition. The competition ended during the early hours of this morning with reigning champions Neal and Massy All Stars and Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove tying for first place. There were seven other bands which tied for places in the finals. Mr. Diaz said this is not an unusual occurrence and credits the high level of music and professionalism of the bands. The eleven large bands going into the finals of the Panorama competition are Petrotin Phase II and Neal and Massy All Stars, Invaders, Siparia Deltones, NLCB Fonclaire, Solo Harmonites, Tropical Angel Harps, RBC Redemption Soundsetters, Renegades, Exodus and Silver Stars.
