The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) is taking issue with recent statements uttered in the parliament by opposition MP, Patricia McIntosh.
During debate on the water improvement rate last Friday, the Port of Spain north/St. Anns west MP questioned the safety of aluminium sulphate and chlorine as part of the treatment regime for drinking water. Responding today, WASA asserts that chlorine is an internationally accepted disinfectant for water treatment. The utility also assures that its use of chlorine and alum are well within the World Health Organization guidelines. WASA admits that there are other forms of disinfection that can be used in water treatment, but it notes that chlorination provides additional protection against organisms in the distribution system. The water utility says to date there has been no recorded outbreak of any water borne diseases in the country, and boasts that this is so because of its rigid treatment regime.
