...yesterday Mr. Deonarine was involved in a dispute over the use of lands in Lopinot.

The Research Officer of the Foodcrop Farmers Association has been found dead. A relative of Norris Deonarine found him dead at his Mc Inroy Street home in Curepe early this morning. The discovery was reportedly made at around six o’clock. There were no marks of violence on the body. Police are on the scene at this time. Only yesterday Mr. Deonarine was involved in a dispute over the use of lands in Lopinot. Some of Mr. Deonarine’s farmers came under attack by cutlass wielding men, as the land ownership dispute got violent. The farmers were beaten by the men who sought to get them off the lands they had been tending for the past months. The farmers said their crops have been stolen and some of them have been banned from going into the fields.

When the farmers took members of the media into the area yesterday, several men with cutlasses attacked them. Many were wounded. Police later took some of the alleged offenders in for questioning. Earlier Norris Deonarine explained that tensions were increasing and the government needed to intervene. Mr. Deonarine also said the police on Monday took some action that can be described as unnecessary force. Mr. Deonarine said the situation was crying out for the intervention of the Police Commissioner and the Government.
